About

david kirkpatrick website photo
David grew up in the quirky college community of Yellow Springs, Ohio, the town that confused uniqueness with importance.  And ever since, he has been struggling with the difference(s) between these two facts of life, especially in his unusual, unpredictable writing, which often includes:
  • Poetry
  • Memoir
  • Eulogy and praise
  •  And his thoughts and feelings as he experiences life.
In David’s first book, In Praise of Strong Women: A Psychiatrist’s Memoir, readers follow him through a lifetime of memories of strong girls and women, starting with his treasured Grandma Pearl to his third grade sweetheart Jeannie to the death of his beloved wife Betsy in March 1991. And David then bravely takes his readers further as he grieves and learns more about life. And new love.

In Praise of Strong Women won an IPPY Award in 2010.

NOW Watch for David’s second book, Neither Married Nor Single: Living with Your Alzheimer’s Partner, in which he shares the overlapping journeys that he and his wife have taken through her Alzheimer’s Disease. The reader follows them through intimate and personal passages, together with professional and objective perspectives. The author comforts and teaches while reaching out to one of the most neglected demographic groups in the world today—the lonely and bewildered, often grief-stricken and frequently conflicted partners of those stricken with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.

  3. David. Do you have any ideas of ways that I might make my book, From the Eagle’s Nest. more marketable to regular publiishing houses. I promised Margaret that I would not pay for the publicatioin of that book and am looking for a solution. Also, I might need a good editor to make that happen. Love talking with you. Susan

  4. David. I am interested in knowing more of your books, Neither Married Nor Single. and In Praise of Strong Women. I know that I had the Praise of Strong Women book, but cannot find it . If you have copies of both books on hand, I would like to buy both of them as my new use of time is on prayer, reflections on books read plus much gathering of leaves in the yard,.

I thought that I had just finished the 14th version of my latest book, From The Eagle’s Nest and then a friend introduced me to her friend at her church.. I talked with him briefly and discovered that he is a poet. He read two of his poems and thrn sugggested that we I could get together to share ideas on writing, etc. I am praying about this as it is even hard to remember his name or contact information. More people are surfacing to add to the Eagles Nest book so it might go into a 15th version. You might pray for me to find a good editor to finish that work. In the meantime, it is a fun project. (Hoping this is not too much information.) Send with much love. “Sister Susan”)

  5. David. I have been thinking about you and would love to get a fresh report. All is well here. I
have come to a peace with this new adventure of being home with my friend, Jack Russell terrier, Edie, and am looking for a fresh assignment as the book is being reviewed by Edie. The challenge of finding a publisher with the Traditional style of publishing and no self publishing format is a different style that is taking fresh energy. In the meantime, I have come to peace with whatever way God chooses to bring the book to print. Also, the broccoli and berries have helped with exercize as has the daily walka with Eddie,
    Love you much Susan.

  7. Hi Dave, I enjoyed visiting your excellent website. I too, personally, tend to confuse uniqueness with importance; perhaps there is an overlap. I have recommended your fine book on Alzheimer’s to friends who have found themselves in a similar situation. Thanks for your work and insight. Bill R

  11. Hi There, I would very much like to have Dr. Kirkpatrick come speak to our Men’s Group at North Shore Community Resources as it is specifically for men who are caring for partners/spouses or have them in care. Most in the group have read ‘Neither Married Nor Single’ and have expressed how keen they’d be to have him come in. I tried emailing at the email listed on this site and it was shot back as undeliverable. I also tried the last clinic I could find and the physician there said he didn’t have current contact info. Please email me at vic.gailiunas@nscr.ca with any contact information that will help us get through to Dr. Kirkpatrick. With gratitude, Vic Gailiunas (NSCR Caregiver Support Program Coordinator)
